Social Emotional Learning to Promote Student Wellness
How do children learn to focus their attention? Persevere through challenging tasks? Mange big feelings? Make and keep friends? Contribute to their communities?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults gain the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for success in school and beyond.
At our schools we teach and integrate social-emotional skills so that children can learn to:
Understand and manage emotions
Set and achieve positive goals
Feel and show empathy for others
Establish and maintain positive relationships
Make responsible decisions
Children learn social emotional skills at home, in their community, school and classrooms.
The five core competencies of SEL are taught in a variety of ways throughout our schools and PK-12 curriculum.
